Flight data: what airlines actually fly

Timetables say what airlines plan. Aircraft transponders say what happened. These findings come from 93 days of public ADS-B flight tracking, the latest four weeks (4 September 2026 to 1 October 2026) compared with the four before.

How these numbers are measured

Aircraft broadcast their position, altitude and callsign by ADS-B. Volunteers' receivers collect them and adsb.lol publishes each day as open data. For every aircraft we split the day into flights: a flight starts and ends below 3,000 ft within 12 km of an airport, lasts at least 15 minutes and has a plausible speed for its distance. The callsign's airline code links it to an airline. Times are wheels-up and wheels-down (aircraft leave 1,000 ft), not gate times.

  • Flights a week: tracked flights in the last 28 days ÷ 4, each direction.
  • Started and stopped: compare two 28-day periods; both airports need at least 14 tracked movements a week in both.
  • Who flies your flight: an aircraft "belongs" to the airline it flies for most over all tracked days.
  • Extra minutes on arrival: time from first crossing 40 nm to landing, minus the airport's 20th-percentile time (the unimpeded reference), averaged. This follows the logic of Eurocontrol's ASMA indicator. Held: turned at least 720° inside the ring (a normal approach turns up to about 360°, so this means at least one full holding orbit).
  • Taxi-out: first ground movement (≥ 5 kt) to take-off, only where receivers track aircraft on the ground.

Limits: receiver coverage is dense in Europe and North America and thin over oceans and in parts of Asia, Africa and South America, so tracked counts are lower than real ones there. A route we did not see is not necessarily cancelled; we only say so where both airports are well covered.
