ZRH layover
A layover in Zurich (ZRH)
The city is 10–15 min from Zurich each way, so budget around 0.5 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Zurich is one of the easiest airports in Europe to leave and come back to: the station is under the terminal and trains to Zürich HB run every few minutes. Passport control applies when you enter or leave the Schengen area, and E gates are reached by the Skymetro. Be back 2 hours before your onward flight.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

0–5 hours
Stay airside
Under five hours, stay airside. Find your onward gate first: if it's an E gate, the Skymetro takes a few minutes from A, B and D. Transfer desks in every gate area issue missing boarding passes.
5–9 hours
Bahnhofstrasse to the lake
Train to Zürich HB, then walk down Bahnhofstrasse to Lake Zurich and loop back through the Old Town via Lindenhof and the Grossmünster on the other bank of the Limmat. Trains back leave every few minutes.
9–24 hours
Out on the lake
Add a boat trip from Bürkliplatz at the end of Bahnhofstrasse, or the S10 from Zürich HB up the Uetliberg for a view over the city and lake. Leave time for the train back and passport control.
