HND layover

A layover in Tokyo (HND)

The city is 15–30 min from Haneda each way, so budget around 1 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Haneda is close to the city: the Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa in about 15 minutes and the Tokyo Monorail Hamamatsucho in about 20, every few minutes. Japanese immigration can still take an hour at busy times. Be back 2 hours before an international departure.

Can you leave the airport?

That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:

We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

How much buffer to leave at Haneda

Your connection depends on the inbound flight. Over the last four weeks, 83% of tracked arrivals at Haneda landed within 15 minutes of their usual time; about 1 in 40 was more than an hour late. On a tight connection, book the earlier inbound flight or a longer layover.

0–5 hours

Stay airside

Under five hours, stay in the international terminal (Terminal 3): its Edo-style shopping street and observation deck are landside, but the airside area has lounges, showers and Japanese food.

5–10 hours

Shinagawa and the Imperial Palace gardens

Take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa, or the Monorail to Hamamatsucho, then one train to Tokyo Station. Walk to the Imperial Palace East Gardens and Marunouchi, and eat at Tokyo Station's ramen street.

10–24 hours

Asakusa and Shibuya

The Keikyu Line runs through to Asakusa for Sensō-ji temple. Add Shibuya's crossing in the evening via the Yamanote Line. Tokyo's trains stop around midnight, so plan a late return by taxi.
