SYD layover
A layover in Sydney (SYD)
The city is 15–25 min from Sydney each way, so budget around 0.8 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. The Airport Link train reaches Circular Quay in about 20 minutes, but entering Australia means immigration, customs and biosecurity checks, and you cannot walk between the international and domestic terminals. Be back 3 hours before an international flight.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

Stay airside
Under six hours, stay put. If you are changing between the international and domestic terminals, use the free Terminal Transfer Bus (about 10 minutes) or the Airport Link train; Qantas and Virgin Australia run their own transfers for eligible passengers.
6–10 hours
Circular Quay and the Opera House
Airport Link to Circular Quay, then walk around the harbour to the Opera House and the Royal Botanic Garden, and back through The Rocks. The train back leaves from the same station.
10–24 hours
A ferry to Manly
Add the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly for the harbour views and the beach, then return the same way. Check the last trains back to the airport if you are out in the evening.
