MUC layover

A layover in Munich (MUC)

The city is 35–45 min from Munich each way, so budget around 1.5 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Munich is in the Schengen area: non-EU travellers leaving the airport pass border control, including EU Entry/Exit System registration, which can add time. S-Bahn S1 and S8 alternate every 10 minutes and take about 35 minutes. Be back 2 hours before a non-Schengen departure.

Can you leave the airport?

That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:

We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

How much buffer to leave at Munich

Your connection depends on the inbound flight. Over the last four weeks, 84.9% of tracked arrivals at Munich landed within 15 minutes of their usual time; about 1 in 42 was more than an hour late. On a tight connection, book the earlier inbound flight or a longer layover.

0–6 hours

Stay airside

Under six hours, the S-Bahn both ways plus border control leaves little time. Munich Airport brews its own beer at Airbräu in the Munich Airport Center, which is landside but reachable without entering the city.

6–10 hours

Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt

Take the S8 to Marienplatz (it also serves the S1 via the west). The town hall, the Frauenkirche and the Viktualienmarkt food market are all within a few minutes' walk of the station.

10–24 hours

The English Garden and a beer hall

Add a walk through the English Garden to the surfers at the Eisbach wave, then a beer hall in the old town. S-Bahn trains to the airport run late into the night.
