MEX layover

A layover in Mexico City (MEX)

The city is 30 min–1h from Mexico City each way, so budget around 2 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Metrobús Line 4 runs from both terminals (entrance 7 in Terminal 1, entrance 2 in Terminal 2) to the Historic Centre and Bellas Artes for MXN 30, paid by contactless card. Traffic is unpredictable: be back 2.5 hours before an international flight.

Can you leave the airport?

That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:

We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

How much buffer to leave at Mexico City

Your connection depends on the inbound flight. Over the last four weeks, 83.7% of tracked arrivals at Mexico City landed within 15 minutes of their usual time; about 1 in 27 was more than an hour late. On a tight connection, book the earlier inbound flight or a longer layover.

0–6 hours

Stay airside

Under six hours, immigration, the ride into the centre and back and security leave little time. Check whether your connection changes terminal; the free inter-terminal train links Terminals 1 and 2.

6–11 hours

The Zócalo and Bellas Artes

Take Metrobús Line 4 to the Historic Centre: the Zócalo, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Palacio de Bellas Artes are a walkable loop. Pay at the validator with a contactless bank card.

11–24 hours

Templo Mayor and Roma–Condesa

Add the Templo Mayor ruins beside the Zócalo, then dinner in Roma or Condesa by taxi or ride-hail. Leave for the airport early in the evening rush, when the roads are slowest.
