LIS layover
A layover in Lisbon (LIS)
The city is 25–35 min from Lisbon each way, so budget around 1.2 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. The Red Line starts at the airport and reaches the centre with one change in about 25 minutes, every 6–9 minutes until 1am. Lisbon is in the Schengen area: allow time at border control. Be back 2 hours before departure.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

0–5 hours
Stay airside
Under five hours, border control and the ride in leave too little time. Lisbon's terminal is compact, with Portuguese food and pastéis de nata airside.
5–9 hours
Baixa and the river
Take the Red Line and change for the Baixa: walk from Rossio down Rua Augusta to the Praça do Comércio on the river, and have coffee in a pastelaria on the way.
9–24 hours
Alfama and Belém
Climb into Alfama for the castle viewpoints, or take the tram or train west to Belém for the monastery and the original pastéis de Belém. Allow for steep hills and slow trams.
