KWI layover

A layover in Kuwait (KWI)

The city is 20–40 min from Kuwait each way, so budget around 1.3 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Kuwait International is 16 km south of Kuwait City, and the airport suggests that with more than 4 hours you can think about leaving. Most nationalities need a Kuwait eVisa arranged before travel; visa on arrival covers only a few categories. Be back 3 hours before departure.

Can you leave the airport?

That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:

We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

How much buffer to leave at Kuwait

Your connection depends on the inbound flight. Over the last four weeks, 81.9% of tracked arrivals at Kuwait landed within 15 minutes of their usual time; about 1 in 18 was more than an hour late. On a tight connection, book the earlier inbound flight or a longer layover.

0–6 hours

Stay airside

Under six hours, or without an eVisa, stay in the terminal: entry and the drive both ways leave little time. Check which terminal your onward flight uses, as Kuwait Airways and other airlines use different ones.

6–12 hours

Kuwait Towers and the souq

With an eVisa, take a taxi along the Gulf Road to Kuwait Towers for the view, then Souq Al-Mubarakiya for lunch in the old market. Both are in the city centre, about 20 to 40 minutes from the airport.

12–24 hours

The waterfront and the Grand Mosque

Add a walk along the Arabian Gulf Street waterfront and a visit to the Grand Mosque, which offers guided tours outside prayer times. Keep to the city centre, and leave for the airport early in the evening traffic.
