KUL layover
A layover in Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
The city is 28–33 min from KLIA each way, so budget around 1.1 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. KLIA is 57 km from the city. The KLIA Ekspres takes 28 minutes from Terminal 1 and 33 from Terminal 2 and runs every 20 minutes; the last train leaves KL Sentral at midnight. Be back 2 hours before an international departure.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

How much buffer to leave at KLIA
Your connection depends on the inbound flight. Over the last four weeks, 84.8% of tracked arrivals at KLIA landed within 15 minutes of their usual time; about 1 in 38 was more than an hour late. On a tight connection, book the earlier inbound flight or a longer layover.

0–7 hours
Stay airside
Under seven hours, the train both ways plus immigration and security leaves too little time in Kuala Lumpur. Terminal 1 has a transit hotel and lounges; Terminal 2 has the Gateway mall landside if you clear immigration anyway.
7–12 hours
KL Sentral and the Petronas Towers
Take the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral, then the LRT to KLCC for the Petronas Towers and the park beneath them. It is a simple there-and-back with one change at KL Sentral.
12–24 hours
Merdeka Square and Central Market
Add the old colonial centre around Merdeka Square and Central Market, a short ride from KL Sentral, then food in Chinatown on Petaling Street. Leave the city at least three hours before your flight.
