HKG layover
A layover in Hong Kong (HKG)
The city is 24–40 min from Hong Kong each way, so budget around 1.3 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. The Airport Express reaches Central in 24 minutes, so even a mid-length layover works. Be back at the airport at least 2 hours before departure. In-town check-in at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations depends on your airline, so check before relying on it.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

0–5 hours
Stay airside
Under five hours, stay in the transit area. Transfer desks are on the arrivals level; the terminal has lounges, showers and plenty of food airside.
5–10 hours
Central and the Peak
Airport Express to Hong Kong station, walk through Central to the Peak Tram for the harbour view, then back down to the Star Ferry pier. It's a compact loop that keeps you near the Airport Express.
10–24 hours
Kowloon after dark
Take the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui for the harbour skyline, then the Temple Street night market in Jordan. Kowloon station on the Airport Express line gets you back to the airport.
