SGN layover
A layover in Ho Chi Minh City (SGN)
The city is 30–50 min from Tan Son Nhat each way, so budget around 1.7 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. All nationalities can get a Vietnam e-visa (up to 90 days) online; apply several working days ahead, as it is not issued at the airport. District 1 is 30 to 50 minutes by taxi or Grab depending on traffic. Be back 3 hours before an international departure.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.
Conditions at Tan Son Nhat now
Raw METAR
0–7 hours
Stay airside
Under seven hours, immigration and Saigon's traffic leave too little time in the city. Stay in the international terminal, which has lounges and Vietnamese food after security.
7–12 hours
District 1 on foot
Take a metered taxi or Grab to Ben Thanh Market, then walk to the Central Post Office and the Nguyen Hue walking street. Everything is close together, so you can plan a fixed time to head back.
12–24 hours
The War Remnants Museum and Cholon
Add the War Remnants Museum and an evening in Cholon, the Chinese quarter, for its temples and markets. Book the ride back by app so you are not haggling at rush hour.
