HEL layover
A layover in Helsinki (HEL)
The city is 30–40 min from Helsinki each way, so budget around 1.3 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Helsinki Airport is all under one roof and transfers are short, but the train to the city takes about half an hour. Leaving the airport means a Schengen border check both ways, including EU Entry/Exit System registration for non-EU travellers.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

0–5 hours
Stay airside
Under five hours, stay airside: you can walk between all gates, and there are lounges and rest areas. Check whether your onward flight leaves from the Schengen or non-Schengen area.
5–9 hours
Senate Square and the Market Square
Train to Helsinki Central, then walk to the Cathedral on Senate Square and down to the Market Square by the harbour. The centre is compact enough for a two-hour loop.
9–24 hours
Suomenlinna by ferry
From the Market Square, the public ferry crosses to the Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO site, in a short ride on a regular HSL ticket. Leave the island with time for the train back.
