FRA layover
A layover in Frankfurt (FRA)
The city is 15–25 min from Frankfurt each way, so budget around 0.8 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. The S-Bahn reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, but Frankfurt is a big airport: allow time to get between Terminal 1 and 2, and for the EU Entry/Exit System at passport control. Be back 2.5 hours before a non-Schengen flight.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

0–5 hours
Stay airside
Under five hours, stay airside. Frankfurt's terminals are large; find your onward gate first, then use the lounges or rest areas nearby. Transfer desks issue missing boarding passes.
5–9 hours
Römerberg and the river
S8 or S9 to Hauptwache or Konstablerwache, walk to the Römerberg square and the rebuilt old town, then along the Main riverbank. The S-Bahn back is frequent and quick.
9–24 hours
Sachsenhausen across the river
Cross the Eiserner Steg footbridge to Sachsenhausen for the Museumsufer and an apple-wine tavern in the evening. Head back to the airport by S-Bahn in plenty of time for security.
