BOG layover
A layover in Bogotá (BOG)
The city is 40 min–1h 10m from El Dorado each way, so budget around 2.3 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Avianca suggests at least 8 hours in Bogotá before leaving the airport. Anyone entering Colombia fills in the Check-MIG form online (from 24 hours before the flight). Bogotá is at 2,600 m, so take it slowly, and allow for heavy traffic: be back 3 hours before an international departure.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

0–8 hours
Stay airside
Under eight hours, El Dorado's immigration queues and the city's traffic make a trip into town a gamble. Rest airside; the terminal has Colombian coffee and food after security.
8–14 hours
La Candelaria and the Gold Museum
Take TransMilenio route K86 or a taxi to the historic centre. Walk La Candelaria's colonial streets, the Plaza de Bolívar and the Gold Museum, which holds thousands of pre-Hispanic gold pieces.
14–24 hours
Monserrate
Add the cable car or funicular up Monserrate for the view over the city, then dinner in La Candelaria or the Zona G. Leave for the airport well before the evening rush.
