BKK layover

A layover in Bangkok (BKK)

The city is 30 min–1h from Suvarnabhumi each way, so budget around 2 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. If you leave the airport you pass Thai immigration and need a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC); staying airside you don't. The Airport Rail Link runs 05:30–24:00 from level B1. Bangkok traffic is slow at rush hour: be back 3 hours before departure.

Can you leave the airport?

That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:

We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

How much buffer to leave at Suvarnabhumi

Your connection depends on the inbound flight. Over the last four weeks, 81.5% of tracked arrivals at Suvarnabhumi landed within 15 minutes of their usual time; about 1 in 32 was more than an hour late. On a tight connection, book the earlier inbound flight or a longer layover.

0–7 hours

Stay airside

Under seven hours, immigration queues at Suvarnabhumi can be long and the city is 30 to 60 minutes away. Rest airside: the terminal has transit lounges, day rooms and Thai food courts on the departures levels.

7–12 hours

Ratchaprasong and a temple by river boat

Take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai and the BTS Skytrain into the centre. With a few hours, pick one area: the malls and Erawan Shrine at Ratchaprasong, or a Chao Phraya river boat to Wat Arun and Wat Pho.

12–24 hours

The Grand Palace and old Bangkok

Start early at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho before the heat, cross to Wat Arun by ferry, then eat in Chinatown on Yaowarat Road in the evening. Leave the city by late evening for a night departure.
