AMS layover

A layover in Amsterdam (AMS)

The city is 15–25 min from Schiphol each way, so budget around 0.8 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Amsterdam Centraal is 15–20 minutes by train, so the city is unusually close. But leaving means passing a Schengen border twice, and the EU's Entry/Exit System registration can lengthen passport queues for non-EU travellers: plan to be back 2.5 hours before a non-Schengen departure.

Can you leave the airport?

That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:

We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

How much buffer to leave at Schiphol

Your connection depends on the inbound flight. Over the last four weeks, 81.6% of tracked arrivals at Schiphol landed within 15 minutes of their usual time; about 1 in 33 was more than an hour late. On a tight connection, book the earlier inbound flight or a longer layover.

0–6 hours

Stay airside

Under six hours, stay airside: Schiphol is a single terminal with lounges, transfer desks in each area and a hotel airside. Check whether your onward gate is Schengen or non-Schengen; the passport check between them takes time.

6–10 hours

Centraal and the canal ring

Train to Amsterdam Centraal, then walk the canal ring and the Jordaan for two or three hours. Everything is on foot from the station, which keeps the journey back predictable.

10–24 hours

Museumplein and the canals

Take bus 397 to the Rijksmuseum for Museumplein (book museum tickets ahead), then walk to Leidseplein and the canals. With a night, the 397 and the night trains get you back to Schiphol at any hour.
