AUH layover
A layover in Abu Dhabi (AUH)
The city is 25–40 min from Zayed International each way, so budget around 1.3 hours of travel for the round trip before immigration and security. Etihad and most airlines use Terminal A. A transit visa requested through Etihad is valid only for entry at Abu Dhabi. Be back at the terminal at least 2 hours before your onward flight.

Can you leave the airport?
That depends on your passport and ticket. Check the official rules before you plan anything outside the terminal:
We link the official sources rather than summarise entry rules, because they change and differ by nationality.

0–5 hours
Stay airside
Under five hours, stay in Terminal A: once you add immigration both ways and the drive, there is little time left in the city. Lounges sell day access for a shower or a rest.
5–10 hours
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The mosque is about 30 minutes by road and open daily from 9am to 10pm. Visit Abu Dhabi publishes a 4–6 hour layover itinerary built around it; dress modestly (women need a headscarf) and allow time for the security queue.
10–24 hours
The mosque, then Saadiyat or the Corniche
Add Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, or an evening walk along the Corniche. Book a taxi back rather than relying on buses, which run only a few times a day from the airport.
